The purpose of this fraud job role is to carry out fraud investigations and can be within a field that involves both civil and criminal investigations. As a fraud investigator, you will conduct in-depth case analysis, prepare and undertake prosecutions, administrative penalties and cautions and may even find yourself summoned to give testimony in court. You would undertake analysis of evidence/data, provide relevant and accurate information assisting in the detection and prevention of the type of fraud that you are working with. Candidates would be required to interview the people involved including witnesses, look into records, and to take a look at the documentation that has been produced by the case.
In many cases, people who are entering the fraud investigation field have formerly worked in investigative units in the police, or as a private investigators or in criminal investigative agency through the armed forces. Candidates must be self starters and have the ability to work on their own initiative. Ideally you should have experience of investigation work and exposure to work of other prosecution officers and legal counsel. People management skills are also important as you might be managing a small team of officers and assistant investigators.
NVQ level 3 or equivalent, a Professionalism in Security (PINS) qualification or a minimum of 4 years suitable relevant experience. Some employers might expect a numerate degree or degree in criminal justice or criminal law.
£18,000 - £50,000 but can be higher in a competitive market. Senior officers are more likely to be on the higher end of the salary guide but can also depend on the post and relative experience.
