CIFAS ORGANISATIONAL INFORMATION

 The CIFAS Vision:

  • To live up to our name of ‘The UK's Fraud Prevention Service' in the field of application, identity, first party and staff fraud and position ourselves as the first choice of organisations in both the private and public sectors to share fraud data.
  • To be the leader in providing fraud prevention services to both sectors.
  • To continue successfully to balance the needs of the organisation with the rights of individuals and to be open to public scrutiny.

Who we are

CIFAS is the UK's Fraud Prevention Service.  CIFAS was founded in 1988 as a 'not for profit' membership association solely dedicated to the prevention of financial crime. We are committed to doing all we can to prevent fraud. CIFAS helps to prevent thousands of frauds every month, and this helps to keep the price of goods and services down.

CIFAS provides a range of fraud prevention services to its Members, including a fraud avoidance system used by the UK's financial services companies, public authorities and other organisations. This system allows Members to exchange details of applications for products or services which are considered to be fraudulent because the information provided by the applicant fails verification checks. CIFAS only provides a fraud prevention service - it is not a credit reference agency.

Members can also exchange information about accounts and services which are being fraudulently misused, or insurance and other claims which are considered to be fraudulent. CIFAS Members also exchange information about innocent victims of fraud to protect them from further fraud. This exchange of information is referred to in a fair processing notice, or use of personal data clause, on application/proposal/claim forms and agreements.

CIFAS' Purpose:

  • To protect the interests of CIFAS Members from the actions of criminals by pooling information on fraud and attempted fraud.
  • To ensure that innocent members of the public who are the victims of fraud are not prejudiced by misuse of their identities and documentation.
  • To expand crime prevention data-sharing to encompass both the private and public sectors in the public interest.

CIFAS seeks:

  • to be the provider of the most comprehensive database of identified fraud data to the private and public sectors
  • to explore the provision of additional fraud databases to the private and public sectors
  • to be recognised by our Members/users as an efficient and effective deliverer of fraud prevention services
  • to represent our Members/users to Government, the media and the business community
  • to provide best practice guidance, training and networking opportunities for our Members/users
  • to manage relationships with all stakeholders responsibly and realistically
  • to build on collaborations and partnerships with others wherever this results in benefits to our Members/users
  • to continue to be recognised as a model for successful not-for-profit data sharing.

What CIFAS offers:

1) Becoming a CIFAS Member

Details of how a company can become a CIFAS Member (together with a full list of all CIFAS Members) can be accessed via the CIFAS website.

2) Staff Fraud

CIFAS also offers a Staff Fraud database to combat the increasing threat posed by the small proportion of staff who act dishonestly to defraud their employer and its honest employees.  Staff fraud can lead to an organisation experiencing a substantial internal impact, significant financial losses and an unquantifiable damage to reputation.

Staff fraud occurs when a member of staff dishonestly makes false representation, or wrongfully fails to disclose information, or abuses a position of trust for personal gain, or causes loss to others.

Full details of the CIFAS Staff Fraud database can also be accessed on the CIFAS website.

3) Training

CIFAS offers a range of training seminars and workshops to Members. These are also suitable for companies and organisations that are not CIFAS Members. The courses on offer are either delivered by members of the CIFAS Training Team or by external consultants who are experts in their subjects.

Courses are held at the CIFAS Offices in central London and typically run from 10.00 - 16.00. Refreshments and a buffet lunch are provided. Training at company premises can be arranged if required.
